West marches

For a west marches / open table what do feel a fun starting hero point value would be? Would you stick to the books 50 point start or start with something lower? The point amount would be the same for player starting the campaign or if new characters need to be made.

I started a West Marches C&S campaign a year ago. We started with 50pts. Lower points might be fun when you start as a group. But for later newcomers they may feel left behind. Especially higher monster DEF may be a barrier for new characters with cheap gear and low skills.
