Story beat Encounter Tables

Based on a conversation on the Runehammer Discord, I realized that most encounter tables, when present at all, are based on environment/ecology, but I thought there was a better way: instead of focusing on quasi-scientific monster taxonomy or environment, have the results of the table match the mood - the dramatic beat needed at that moment at your table. Do you need a surprise attack to shake things up, or an ominous rumble foreshadowing great danger on the horizon? Do you need to put the PCs on the run, or toss them some red meat for a fast vicious victory (with unforeseen consequences)? These tables can give you a quick answer to match the moment that you need.

Easy Foes

Surprising Foes

  1. mimic
  2. ghost
  3. doppelgänger
  4. illusionist
  5. leprechaun
  6. assassins

Overwhelming Foes

  5. deep ones
  6. giant

Relentless Foes

  1. Golem
  2. Death Knights
  3. Antmen
  4. zombie horde
  5. hell hound
  6. revenant

"Unbeatable" Foes

  1. Angel/Demon
  2. Elemental
  3. Liche
  4. Beholder
  5. Titan
  6. Dragon
