Inspired by all you magnificent bastards, I’ve been gluing and painting Jenga blocks, and turning a 2’x4’ dry erase board into to 2 double sided 2’ dry erase on one side, painted for blackish and greenish background on the hardboard side. And then painted the backs of my campaign bulletin boards for a few other backgrounds (sea/sky, industrial grey, and cavernous brown/black). One thing O tried that worked out well is varying from the default grey on one side of about half the Jenga stackers, putting in some black and textured brown.
