Newb: Loot and Effort and Hearts

#1

Hi, I have few questions:

  1. how often do you give loot?
  2. do y tell the PC, how many hearts a monster has or to complete a task
  3. cursed items, how does the player remove the curse? requires x hearts of effort? timed base…etc

I am trying to get a general feel of where to start
Any insight would be great
Cheers

  1. Usually I’ll throw a chest or two into a significant encounter. Of course, I’ll also have a timer going (Room filling with water, reinforcements on the way, etc) so that the effort rolls to open the chest have a little spice.

  2. Never.

  3. That’s up to you. I like turning that sort of thing into a quest.

The key though is that this whole game is a toolbox with a few key principles - after that you can houserule and freestyle to your heart’s content. Find a balance that works for your table.

Happy gaming.

  1. A simple Shabby or Ancient loot roll per room, Epic and/or Bizzare in important encounters. A milestone type probably every 2-3 sessions as appropriate.
  2. I take out d10 tracker die after a successful hit by a player. The look on their faces when an enemy turns out to have 3 hearts is priceless.
  3. I’d also make it a quest to remove cursed loot.

That’s what I do, anyway.

all day urry! If players even say ‘i look for any stuff around’ bam roll 1d100! Hand out loot like crazy, but also use monsters and hazards to destroy or eliminate it…
