Hey Shields!
I was looking at some dice drop results in which creative people like @ChlodwigChubb used all the die standard types, and I got inspired to write up this little method for chucking a handful of dice at a sheet of paper, and arranging your challenges as they land, using the corresponding effort type as guidance. Here is it:
D4 - a challenge of primal effort: climb a wall, balance on a narrow ledge, endure bitter wind, arrange the stones to solve a puzzle.
D6 - a challenge of tools or weapons: dig out an entrance, battle a foe, aplly leverage to open a gate
D8 - a device challenge: a clever trap or machine needing repair, or foes enhanced by machines/engines
D10 - a mystical or energetic challenge: defiled temples, golden trees, sentient wells, mage locks, and sinister AIs. These challenges are rooted in the unseen, the arcane, and the mystical
D12 - ultimate challenge; obstacles and foes with no clear weakness, no easy solutions; onerous problems which may require being avoided as much as overcome.
D20 - the goal, exit, end point, or focus.
Unless otherwise noted, the number rolled corresponds to the stat needed to overcome it, or the primary stat/attack style of the foe; if the roll is higher than 6, it may be resolved with (or employ) either multiple stats, or no stats.
You’ll probably need/want other inspirations or frames of reference for understanding the space and fiction in which these challenges occur.
