Hey Lumpy Heads, a little while ago I was talking with some immortals on the discord server about a concept I had for a ghost mountain game. The Traveling Band. As a backstory, I am loosely basing this campaign from the movie “Six String Samurai” but with a more Wild West theme, rather than post apocalypse. If you haven’t seen the film yet it is a fantastic piece of B Movie cinema from 1998, following the travels of Buddy on his way to Vegas to take the empty throne of the newly dead King (Elvis). It is freely available on YouTube so I highly recommend a viewing, it is full of role playing hooks and tropes. Anyhow I finally ran my first night of gameplay and made a write up so I wanted to share it with you guys. We only made it through one “room” as a majority of the session was creating characters and doing basic session zero stuff. But we finally got the band back together and they are going to be escorting Buddy through several gigs on his way to “Georgia” to reclaim “Johnny’s” throne, before the Devil can rosin up his bow and drag ghost mountain down to hell.

umm. “Hell Yeah” a crossroads idea. So I’ve just been tootling around the web and I got into a loop of listening to Johnny Cash songs, and I was wondering what it would be like if the party were on the other side of his songs, and I realized that, played the right way, the Man in Black could be a rather intimidating evil Bard villain. A highwayman who conjures rings of fire, killing a man just to watch him die and swearing that his god will cut you down, mustering up an army of flying ghost riders… it boggles the mind, plus you could play orchestral versions of his songs with no words and add monologues.

As more sessions go on and the story evolves I will post more write ups if anyone is interested. Also, most of my players actually opted out of being in the actual band. But for anyone who is curious we have Frances the merch booth person (Using the Gambler class options), Thomas the life long Roadie (Old timer), Bongo the Drummer (mariachi), and a couple more yet to be determined characters for the friends who couldn’t make it to this session due to terrible weather. It is looking to be a fun yet short campaign (I’m thinking like 5 sessions max) so I hope anyone else tries it out. I’m basically using this campaign as an excuse to tes out my musical magic ideas which are documented in another post. Of Music and Magic

Night 2 of Devil Went Down to Georgia. The gang got in a battle of the bands, using charisma checks and RP to sway the bar patrons hearts (literal hearts of Effort). After the battle was won some mercenaries arrived alerting the party that “Top hat” has put a price on any guitar plucking sons of guns on their way to Georgia.

After defeating the threat a large group of Muertos on a hellbound carriage arrived and chased the crew in their cart across a rickety old bridge over a canyon. The muertos used a huge ladder to board the players cart while the infernal boss summoned a shadowy steed to chase down the merch booth girl who found a mysterious crystal. Several muertos met a watery end after a long drop. I have been having fun play testing the song magic of the traveling band and I’m getting positive feedback from my players.

I will continue updating this thread as long as people are interested. Session 3 will involve a family of cannibals, windmill monstrosities, and a trip to hell.
