Books as idea generators

Many of us consider books a good resource for RPG idea generation. I recently picked up this used book that I stumbled on to. It is particularly amazing as potential Ghost Mountain content. Wild West stuff is not in my wheelhouse so for me, this is a gem.

It’s worth looking for if you’re frequently running any Wild West setting. Really, any setting if you just change the names and locations. Each of the short (like 2 page) stories in this book is ripe with potential to springboard from.

Besides novels, does anyone else have recommendations for non-RPG books they’ve used for idea generation?

Ah! Our own appendix-n.

Any Lovecraft or Cthulhu Mythos story collection is ripe for not just ideas, but also insight into how to create setting and tone.

Tabletop games in Kickstarter are really usefull as idea/setting generators.

You’re so right on this. I have a number of adventure games that provide adventure plots, NPCs and loot as ideas that can easily be transferred into an actual RPG format.

In fact, I have actually used ICRPG rules to play through some of these games and it works quite well.
